Experience in Application of XLPD Extra Low-Profile Robotic LHD for Narrow Bedded Vein Mining at Mine No.8 of ‘PIMCU’ PJSC
The DOK-ING XLPD low-profile tracked LHD was evaluated for narrow bedded vein mining (1.6–1.8 m) at Mine No. 8 of ´PIMCU´ PJSC, where shallow-dipping ore bodies with an average thickness of 1.62 m account for approximately 30% of the mine's reserves. Conventional LHDs operating under these conditions caused ore dilution of up to 43%, creating the need for a low-profile loading and hauling solution capable of more selective extraction with minimal waste rock excavation.
Field trials assessed the XLPD's operational performance, mobility, productivity, reliability, maintenance requirements, and suitability for the mine's geological and operational conditions. Following the redesign of the bucket with an improved cutting lip, loading efficiency increased significantly, while the machine demonstrated stable operation on steep gradients, reliable traction, and safe remote-controlled operation. Routine maintenance requirements were comparable to those of conventional diesel LHDs, with only additional inspection of the track system. Based on the trial results, the mining method was optimized by reducing stope height from 3 m to 1.8–2.0 m and integrating the XLPD for ore loading and short-distance haulage, while conventional LHDs were retained for development and ore transport.
The optimized mining system improved selectivity, reduced ore dilution by approximately 33%, enhanced operator safety, and lowered ore processing costs despite slightly higher backfilling requirements. Economic analysis estimated an investment payback period of approximately 1.5 years, with most of the financial benefit resulting from reduced downstream mineral processing and metallurgical costs. Overall, the study confirmed that the XLPD is a technically and economically viable solution for the safe and efficient extraction of narrow, flat-dipping ore bodies.
